Description
Letter from Joseph Link Jr., Director of Publicity for The Fenwick, to Xavier University President Dennis Burns, SJ regarding a bronze tablet that had been erected by members of Xavier's Students Army Training Corps unit at the Fenwick Club. Included is a transcription of the tablet, which honors the sisters and nurses who cared for the students during the 1918 influenza pandemic.
Biographical/Historical Information
Shortly after its establishment in fall 1918, members of the Students Army Training Corps unit at Xavier were quarantined at the Fenwick Club in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio in an effort to prevent the spread of influenza. While the students were quarantined, lay nurses from Good Samaritan Hospital and sisters from the Sisters of Charity of Mr. St. Joseph tended to the students. A tablet erected to memorialize the work of the nurses and sisters records that "fifty-three young men were stricken, but no deaths occurred."
