Portrait of Leopold Bushart, SJ, who served as president of Xavier University from 1871-1874. Photograph dated approximately 1874.

Biographical Information

Tenth Jesuit president Rev. Leopold Bushart was born January 27, 1833 in Belgium. He entered the Society of Jesus in Belgium in 1854 and came to America in 1857 with Fr. De Smet. He was professor of philosophy at Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio (then known as St. Xavier College) from 1863-1869 before his term as president. He was also president of St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri and Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He served as provincial from 1882-1885. He died September 1, 1909 while serving as treasurer of the Missouri Province in St. Louis, Missouri. (Source: Jesuits of the Middle United States, 1938)
