Biographical Information
John Anthony Elet, SJ, the first Jesuit president of Xavier University (then St. Xavier College) was born February 19, 1802 at St. Amand, Belgium. He arrived in America in 1821 and entered the Society of Jesus at White Marsh, Maryland October 6, 1821. He traveled west in 1823 with a group of Jesuits that settled at Florissant, Missouri where he was ordained September 23, 1827. He also served as president of St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri; participated in a congregation of procurators in Rome, Italy; and was vice-provincial of the Missouri Province.
