Portrait of John I. Coghlan, SJ, who served as president of Xavier University from 1881-1884. Photograph dated approximately 1884.

Biographical Information

Fourteenth Jesuit president Rev. John Coghlan was born April 21, 1829 at Templebraden, County Limerick, Ireland. After arriving in America in 1848, he studied at St. Louis University. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1852 and was ordained in 1862. Following his ordination he primarily served as a missionary until 1893. In addition to his term at Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio (then known as St. Xavier College), he also served as pastor of St. Mary’s Church, Kansas. He died August 7, 1897 In St. Louis, Missouri. (Source: Xavier Athenaeum, November 1916)
