Portrait of Henry Schaapman, SJ, who served as president of Xavier University from 1887-1893. Photograph dated approximately 1893.

Biographical Information

Seventeenth Jesuit president Rev. Henry Schaapman was born October 31, 1838 in Holland. He arrived in America at an early age with his parents. He studied at St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri and entered Society of Jesus at Florissant, Missouri at the age of sixteen in 1854. Following his ordination he served as vice-president of St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri and after his term at Xavier University (then known as St. Xavier College) he served as president of Detroit University, Detroit, Michigan. He died March 19, 1915 in Detroit, Michigan. (Source: Xavier Athenaeum, November 1916)
