Biographical Information
Twenty-first Jesuit president Rev. Joseph Grimmelsman was born March 17, 1853 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He studied at Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio (then known as St. Xavier College) and St. Mary’s College, Lebanon, Kentucky. He entered the Society of Jesus August 9, 1871 in Florissant, Missouri. He also studied at Woodstock College, Woodstock, Maryland and in Louvain, Belgium. He served as president of Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin and St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri. He served as provincial of the Missouri Province from 1899-1905. He died December 20, 1918 in St. Louis, Missouri. (Source: Jesuits of the Middle United States, 1938)
