Biographical Information
Fourth Jesuit president Rev. George A. Carrell, a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania entered the Society of Jesus at White Marsh, Maryland in 1820. He studied theology at St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri and was ordained in 1835. He was also president of St. Louis University and pastor of St. Xavier Church, Cincinnati, Ohio. During his presidency at Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio (then known as St. Xavier College) he was appointed the first bishop of the Diocese of Covington, Kentucky. He died September 25, 1863.
