Portrait of Dennis F. Burns, SJ, who served as president of Xavier University from 1935-1940. Photograph dated approximately 1940.

Biographical Information

Twenty-sixth Jesuit president Rev. Dennis F. Burns was born August 31, 1889 in Chicago, Illinois. His early studies were at St. Ignatius College, Chicago, Illinois. He entered the Society of Jesus in July 26, 1908 and was ordained in June 24, 1922. He received BA and MA degrees from St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri and Ph. D. from Gregorian University, Rome, Italy in 1931. Before coming to Xavier University he was regent and professor of jurisprudence at Loyola University School of Law, Chicago, Illinois. After leaving Xavier he was professor of philosophy at John Carroll University, Cleveland, Ohio. He died September 9, 1957. (Sources: Xaverian News, March 14, 1935; To See Great Wonders, 2006)
