Portrait of James E. Hoff, SJ, who served as president of Xavier University from 1991-2000. Photograph dated approximately 2000.

Biographical Information

Thirty-third Jesuit president Rev. James E. Hoff was born June 23, 1932 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He entered the Society of Jesus on August 17, 1953 and was ordained on June 8, 1965. He received his BS in biology and MA in philosophy from Spring Hill College, Mobile, Alabama. He also received a MA in theology from St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri and PhD in theology from the Gregorian University, Rome, Italy. Before Xavier he held several administrative and academic positions at Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska. He died July 23, 2004 at the Jesuit Residence, Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio.
