Description
- Adrienne Radzvickas, Technical Services Librarian, Lincoln College
- Constance Lee, Branch Library Director, Benedictine University at Springfield
Weeding is important to improve the perceived quality of a collection and to make space for new books. There are still a lot of libraries out there that have never weeded their collection, which can be a daunting process. In this presentation, we will discuss our experience in weeding two such collections, one at Illinois College and one at Lincoln College. We will discuss the following parts of the process:
• Developing data-driven criteria to use for weeding.
• Developing weeding workflows and realistic project timeframes.
• Dealing with the political aspects of weeding.
• Removing unwanted books.
We will discuss our outcomes and ways to assess the weeding process, such as a change in the average age of a collection.
