The ORESME Reading Group will hold its 38th meeting on Sat, Sep 30, 2017, as part of the Midwest History of Mathematics Conference (Sep 29-30) at Wabash College (Crawfordsville, IN).
The keynote speaker for the MHMC is Rob Bradley (Adelphi University), one of the founders of ORESME's sister reading group, ARITHMOS. On Friday evening Bradley will speak on the mathematical career of Jean le Rond d'Alembert (1717-1783), whose tercentennial anniversary we are celebrating. On Saturday, we will enlist all the meeting participants to join ORESME in reading two papers of d'Alembert:
- §I of Reflections on divergent and convergent series (Réflexions sur les suites divergentes ou convergentes), XXXVme Mémoire, Opuscules, 1768, pp. 171-183. The translation is mine, with assistance from Dick Pulskamp and Rob Bradley.
- A study of the curve formed by a taut string set to vibrating (Récherches sur la courbe que forme une corde tenduë mise en vibration), Memoires de l'Academie royale des sciences et belles lettres. Classe de mathematique. Anné 1747, Tome 3, pp. 214-219. The translation is by Dan Curtin.
