Simple View, Science, and the State: A critical Reading of the Ohio Literacy Plan
Abstract
In 2020, the Ohio State Literacy team published Ohio’s Plan to Raise Literacy Achievement. The eight-section, 51-page document articulates a state literacy framework, promoting proficiency in reading, writing, and communication from birth to grade 12. Founded in the Simple View of Reading, the team compels schools to align to the State’s plan. We engage in a critical reading of this literacy plan so that we can begin to share ideas about how we might plan instruction in our reading programs to address, negotiate, and resist.
