Abstract
This project aims to ensure that SANE-Ps are aware of the vicarious trauma (VT) they are exposed to every day and how to decrease its impact on their practice. VT refers to the psychological impact of listening to, seeing, and feeling someone else’s traumatic experiences or injuries and how those change one’s views on the world and others. 38.1% of 42 SANEs who completed the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale Survey met the criteria for undergoing VT. The VT Relief Program will introduce education on VT, educate on how to utilize acknowledge, connection, talk (ACT), and teach mindfulness to attempt to reduce the levels of VT in SANE-Ps who work in the Center of Hope at a local children’s hospital. Orem’s Theory of Self-Care explains the importance of the VT Relief Program. The program will be released in three phases to ensure SANE-Ps optimize their self-care agency capabilities. A literature review was utilized to aid in the formation of the VT Relief Program. Institution Review Board (IRB) approval will not be sought until the organization approves the program. Results showed when Cain and Gautreaux introduced education, the levels of secondary traumatic stress (STS) or VT significantly decreased (p = .035). When mindfulness was introduced, there was a significant improvement (p < .0001) in acting with awareness and observing. Overall wellness is related to a significant (p < .001) decrease in levels of VT. The STSS was used in multiple studies and exhibited significant results while comparing pre and post-intervention numbers. Utilizing the VT Relief Program will ensure SANE-Ps have adequate knowledge of VT and how to manage it effectively. Further research needs to be completed on SANE-Ps specifically and should focus on the education methods that are the most effective.
