Abstract
Throughout this paper, the researcher evaluates current literature on pressure injury prevention and a family-centered care approach to healthcare to create a family-centered educational poster to prevent pressure injuries in cardiothoracic surgical patients. Empowering patients and families by providing increased education aids in the family-centered care approach. The literature review was used to create an educational tool for patients and families to work toward preventing or reducing the severity and incidence of pressure injuries. The educational tool was used in a cardiothoracic intensive care unit with cardiothoracic surgical patients. The results of the educational tool were inconclusive. More data is needed to determine if this intervention alone would reduce the incidence and prevalence of pressure injuries in cardiothoracic surgical patients. In conclusion, a family-centered care approach to preventing pressure injuries could be effective with further evaluation.
