Abstract
An examination of the complicated and controversial gender dynamics of Dylan's The Philosophy of Modern Song. The piece considers Dylan's chapters on songs by Elvis Costello, Rosemary Clooney, the Eagles, and Santana, placing them in conversation with wide-ranging influences, from Medusa to Little Red Riding Hood, Freud to Cixous, Joyce Carol Oates to Angela Carter, old murder ballads to contemporary feminist criticism.
