Abstract
Collaborative writing is a practice seen often in the workplace, and it is a skill that is taught during a student’s undergraduate years. Individuals can reap many benefits from collaborative writing when executed efficiently, but there are also many setbacks that can create a harmful environment. For this research study, a survey was conducted intending to find if collaborative writing projects benefit the student body at Xavier University and in what ways does it help or hurt an individual’s writing. The survey consisted of questions regarding one’s demographics, personal experiences with collaborative writing if any, positives and negatives of such experiences, and participants' preferences regarding collaborative versus independent writing. The data was then compared to other university studies, which emphasize the need for collaborative writing techniques to be implemented in classrooms because of its profound benefits. However, the findings of this survey present conflicting perspectives compared to those of other studies.
