Abstract
It is no secret that race, and ethnicity, are intertwining factors that can put individuals at a disadvantage due to systemic barriers in various institutions. These instances of racism and discrimination can occur in any institution, including schools, which can be detrimental to a student’s education and attendance during their early and adolescent years. Previous research has shown that racist and discriminatory experiences, as well as culturally insensitive or unaware staff, can leave a negative impact on students, and specifically, students of color. The purpose of this research project will revolve around these two topics: race and attendance at Oyler High School, and if racial and/or discriminative instances experienced by students at Oyler has ever influenced declining attendance rates and chronic absenteeism. Data is collected using the survey Impact of Race on Attendance at Oyler High School administered to all students between 9th and 12th grade at Oyler High School. The survey aims to create conversation around the correlation between racist and/or discriminative instances and chronic absenteeism with students at Oyler High School, as well as provide a deeper analysis of Oyler’s efforts to provide a safe environment if racist and/or discriminative instances are being reduced. Due to the rising chronic absenteeism rates across Oyler High School, there are limitations surrounding how many surveys will be fully completed. The chronically absent students will, more than likely, not receive the opportunity to complete the survey during the two week data collection period despite those who are chronically absent being the specific population observed throughout the research project.
